Zach Dishes on the 3rd Dimension

O.k., maybe it is just me when i say this but, I don’t want EVERYTHING to be 3D. I like to see the big blockbuster movies that come out in 3d. They may destroy my eyes for a solid 2 hours after i see them though. I remember seeing avatar in 3d and in standard format and i will say that the movie was a much more enjoyable experience  when i saw it in 3d. However there are few movies where i saw the preview and said man I want to see that in 3d.
There has been a huge craze for 3d everything over the past year. Companies have been pumping out 3d t.v.s and Nintendo is even coming out with its new game-boy that supports 3D graphics. I hate to say this but, come on. I don’t want to play my games in 3D I’m o.k. with my standard graphics. My eyes can’t take the abuse that 3D dishes out on them. Just watching a movie can be a strain, I can’t imagine what it’s like to play a free roaming game in 3D. I also don’t want to feel like I’m missing out on content if a movie or game is made around 3d graphics. I know that they are spending more time developing this format. Which is great, industries need to be shook up every now and then. It makes them create a new outlet for consumers to enjoy.
My problem with the whole thing maybe that, because regularly I require corrective lenses to see with 20/20 vision, that the whole experience kills my eyes. I don’t really want to see the day where i can walk into a Optometrist’s office and get offered a 3D version of my glasses either. I guess I am one of the small groups that just can’t get behind this craze. It died out in the 80′s for a reason. Maybe because the technology wasn’t that good at that point in time. Then again I might be simplistic as to a don’t mix up what I already like mentality.
While there are a few games that i have a slight interest in playing in 3D, I just can’t bring myself to spend that much money on a 3D television.  I understand that new technology is always expensive i feel that it’s really not worth the price when it dose not add that much to the experience. Take Killzone 3 I was intrigued at the thought of playing it in an optional 3d mode. The first person experience is designed make you feel like you are literally in the game. Which is appealing to a gamer like me. Who typically spends  an obscene amount of time playing one. My concern is i won’t want to play the game after 1 or 2 hours because i might get a headache or have my eyes start to become irritated. It will take away from my experience instead of improving it. Combine 3d with the motion controllers and we are one step closer from virtual reality. When i was a child I loved the idea of it, but now as an adult i feel that game developer need to chose a side.I prefer hand held controller games. I enjoy the occasional motion sensor game, but almost always I go to old school mode with just a controller in my hand and my butt on the couch. I know that I diverged from my original thought, but the two crazes remind me of one another.
Getting people more engrossed with the product that studios and developers are putting out is their overall goal. Sometimes however it comes across as the studio putting out a poor product and covering it up with 3d appeal. The Green Hornet was a sub-par movie that i decided to see in 3D. The movie itself was not a viewing experience that i would sit through again. However the 3d effects that where put into the movie showed. Explosions made me feel like my face was going to melt. Though the same occurrence happened my eyes they strained and literally hurt after the movie. I may just need to give the technology time to develop further for people like me to enjoy it without strain. Until that day arrives I’m o.k. with my standard format games and movies.
